Basic Process of Injection Molding

Material Preparation: The process starts with raw material, usually in the form of plastic pellets (often thermoplastics like ABS, polycarbonate, nylon, or PP granules). The plastic pellets are fed into a hopper that directs them into the injection molding machine’s barrel.

Melting (Plasticizing): The plastic pellets are heated inside the barrel to a molten state. The barrel has a rotating screw or plunger, which both heats the material and moves it forward. The temperature is controlled precisely to ensure the plastic reaches the proper viscosity for injection. The material must be fully molten to flow into the mold efficiently.

Injection: Once the plastic is sufficiently melted, the screw or plunger pushes the molten plastic into the injection mold under high pressure. The mold is made of two parts: the core (the internal shape of the part) and the cavity (the outer shape). The mold closes around the injected material, and it is designed to create the exact shape of the part or product being produced.

Cooling: After injection, the mold is kept under pressure while the plastic cools and solidifies. The cooling time depends on factors like the thickness of the part, material properties, and the design of the mold. A cooling system within the mold helps speed up this process. The cooling phase is critical for ensuring that the part maintains its shape and dimensions.

Ejection: Once the part has cooled and solidified, the mold opens, and the ejection system (typically ejector pins) pushes the finished part out of the mold cavity. The part is then ready to be inspected, and any excess material (like sprue or runners) is usually removed.

Post-Processing: Depending on the design and purpose of the part, additional post-processing steps may be required. These can include processes such as painting, printing, trimming, or assembly. Some parts may also undergo quality control checks to ensure they meet the required specifications.
