An injection molding machine consists of three main parts, each with a specific function in the overall injection molding process:

  1. Injection Unit

Function: The injection unit is responsible for melting the plastic material and injecting it into the mold cavity. It consists of the following subcomponents:
Hopper: This is where the raw plastic material (typically in the form of pellets or granules) is fed into the machine.
Screw: The screw rotates and moves the plastic material forward. As it turns, it melts the plastic by applying heat and pressure.
Barrel: The barrel surrounds the screw and provides a controlled environment for the plastic material to melt and travel toward the mold.
Nozzle: The nozzle is the final part of the injection unit, through which the molten plastic is injected into the mold cavity under high pressure.
Process: The injection unit uses a combination of heat, pressure, and mechanical rotation to melt and inject the plastic material into the mold.

  1. Clamping Unit

Function: The clamping unit is responsible for opening and closing the mold, applying the necessary pressure to hold the mold together during the injection process, and then ejecting the part once it has solidified.
Platen: The platens are the flat plates that hold the mold halves. The fixed platen holds one half of the mold, while the moving platen is part of the clamping mechanism that allows for mold opening and closing.
Tie Bars: Tie bars are the support structure for the mold and provide stability during the injection process. They allow the moving platen to travel forward and backward.
Hydraulic or Electric Mechanism: The clamping unit uses a hydraulic or electric system to apply force (clamping pressure) to hold the mold together during injection, preventing the mold from separating.
Process: The clamping unit ensures that the mold is securely closed under the required pressure before the injection process begins. After the part is molded, the clamping unit opens the mold for part ejection.

  1. Ejection System

Function: The ejection system is responsible for removing the molded part from the mold once it has cooled and solidified.
Ejector Pins: Ejector pins are mechanical components that push the part out of the mold cavity. They are activated after the mold opens and push the finished part out.
Ejector Plate: The ejector plate holds the ejector pins and moves them to push the part from the mold cavity.
Springs: Springs provide the necessary force to push the ejector plate and ejector pins.
Process: After the part has cooled, the ejection system activates to push the molded part out of the mold. It ensures that the part is ejected smoothly without damage, ready for further processing or packaging.
